How the 2019 Ram 1500 Brings Tech to the Classic Truck

1440 × 700FCA’s engineers have gone all-out to make the 2019 Ram 1500 the most technologically advanced truck on the road. Multiple automotive experts who’ve had the chance to test FCA’s new vehicle concur that the new 15th generation Ram 1500 is a high-tech winner.

Here’s a sample of recent opinion:

Let’s take a closer look at how FCA has improved what was already a highly capable, massively popular truck (more than 500,000 Rams were sold last year in the U.S.)

Digital Cockpit
The most obvious sign that the new Ram 1500 incorporates state-of-art technology is the mega-sized 12-inch UConnect touchscreen screen optionally available in its high-end Laramie trim level (Tradesman and Big Horn/Lone Star trim levels come standard with 5-inch Uconnect 3 displays that can be upgraded to 8.4-inch diameter screens running UConnect 4C NAV). Improved 3D mapping and voice direction make navigating from A to B easier than ever. Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto functionality are fully supported.

Both 8.4-inch and 12-inch screens offer split-screen capability that makes it easy to personalize the display to one’s liking. Additionally, the center console features full analog redundancy in the form of rotary knobs to control functions used most often (e.g. climate control).

Also new in the 2019 Ram 1500 is an expanded, highly configurable center console storage unit large enough to cradle and/or stow a 15-inch laptop and peripherals, plus a cellphone charging station. 5 USB ports are available, 2 of them in the rear seat compartment.

Power and Economy
At rollout, Ram 1500’s are equipped with FCA’s robust, field-proven Pentastar V6 engine rated at 305 HP and 269 lb.-ft. of Torque (a V8 rated at 395 HP with 405 lb.-ft. of torque is available as an option;  a diesel option will likely appear sometime in 2019). The Pentastar’s power is boosted by FCA’s mild hybrid system, called eTorque, upping it by 90 lb.-ft.

eTorque replaces the traditional alternator with a belt-driven motor-generator connected to a 300-watt lithium battery pack placed beneath the rear seats. The power stored in the battery can be applied to smooth out gear-shifting, apply bursts of torque when needed, and provide regenerative braking. On top of that, eTorque enhances fuel efficiency by up to 10 percent.

Ram trucks are rugged, no-nonsense utility vehicles, and the 1500’s 2,300 lb. payload and 12,750 lb. towing capacity make it a first-class hauler. But FCA’s designers went out of their way to make travelling in the Ram 1500 more comfortable – and luxurious -- than in any truck on the road today. Rear suspension coil springs provide a smoother suspension than traditional leaf springs. An active noise cancellation in the passenger compartment muffles engine noise to a whisper. And an optional air suspension makes the Ram 1500 ride as smooth as a luxury car (one reviewer compared its drive comfort to that provided by a high-end Mercedes).

Safety Tech
FCA intends the all-new Ram 1500 to be as useful in day-to-day driving situations as it is for towing and hauling, so they packed it with more than 100 available high-tech, state-of-art safety features. The Ram 1500’s frame is made from 98 percent high-strength steel whose design incorporates frame rail technology that absorbs impact energy. Additionally, frame-mounted, high-strength steel tire blockers redirect energy away from the passenger compartment in front impact situations.

Other available safety features include:

-          Six airbags, including full cab side-curtain and seat-mounted side bags

-          Largest (14.9-inch) brakes in category

-          Adaptive Bi-LED and Quad LED projector lamps providing improved range

-          Adaptive Cruise Control with ability to bring vehicle to full stop and then resume once traffic begins moving again

-          Lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist

-          Blind spot monitoring that includes coverage for trailer

-          Forward Collision Warning-Plus that can warn the driver if impact appears imminent and then assist with driver response by deploying brakes

-          A 360-degree Surround View Camera with bird’s-eye perspective of vehicle and its surroundings
