How the 2018 Dodge Durango is the Friendly Giant of SUVs

The 2018 Dodge Durango is the latest incarnation of Dodge’s powerful, spacious, mid-size SUV. Let’s look at what this new vehicle offers consumers, what’s new in 2018, and why it’s a great choice for both hauling (and with the new Durango SRT, real performance driving).

Powerful engine choices
Three powerful, peppy engines are available to move the 2018 Dodge Durango: a 3.6 liter, 293 HP Pentastar V6, a 5.7 liter 360 HP HEMI V8, and a 6.4 liter 475 HP HEMI V8. Each is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission; a very large 24.5 gallon fuel tank provides the Durango with extended range between fueling stops. Dodge notes that while there are many SUVs on the road, only the Durango is a true sport utility vehicle. Given its powerful trio of available engines, it’s hard to argue with that assertion.

The Durango comes with 9 available trim options ranging from the base-level SXT (MSRP starting at $29,995) to the performance-optimized SRT (MSRP starting at $62,995). Standard features include 18-inch alloy wheels, electronic stability control, and 4-channel anti-lock brakes.

Muscle-car DNA in a mid-size SUV
The Durango’s biggest news in 2018 is the availability of the high-performance SRT model, which takes its styling cues and muscle car-class power plant from Dodge’s legendary Charger and Challenger muscle cars. The SRT’s 475 HP HEMI V8 can accelerate the Durango from 0 to 60 HP in a jaw-dropping 4.4 seconds. The SRT includes a performance-tuned AWD system, sport-tuned suspension, 20-inch high, 10-inch wide tires, and high-performance Brembo brakes. These features combine to make the new Durango, in Dodge’s words, “the only SUV with street cred.” Dodge rates the SRT’s towing capacity at 8,700 lbs when properly equipped.

Interior features
The Durango is a roomy vehicle built to seat 7 featuring 84.5 cubic feet of cargo storage when the second and third-row seats are folded down. A 7-inch thin-film reconfigurable digital gauge cluster is standard, along with a leather-wrapped sports-styled steering wheel. Eight interior fabric packages are available for the 2018 Dodge Durango. A media hub with 2 USB ports is standard, along with 2 12-volt outlets. FCA’s well-regarded UConnect 7.0 is standard on lower-tier trim levels (SCT and GT); Uconnect 8.4 is standard on higher-tier (R/T, Citadel, and SRT) trim levels. All told, the Durango’s large (9) number of trim levels provide Durango buyers a wide range of interior feature configuration options ranging from stylishly functional to out-and-out luxurious.

Safety and Security
Standard safety features included in the 2018 Durango include Electronic Stability Control, Rain Brake Support, Hill Start Alert, Ready Alert Braking, Trailer Sway Control, and a Security Alarm. Also standard are advanced multistage air bags for driver and front-passenger, supplementary side-curtain bags (all rows), and supplemental side and front-seat side bags. The most advanced safety/security features are available through two optional Package Groups: the Safety/Security & Convenience Group and the Technology Group. The first Group includes rain-sensing windshield wipers, auto high-beam headlamp control, Blind Spot Monitoring and Rear Cross Path Detection systems. The second group includes Active Cruise Control capable of bringing the vehicle to a complete spot, plus the LaneSense Lane Departure Warning system.
